My sad story with the Laredo repair center in Texas still unfolds as I write this. To keep a longer story short, my NEX-7 got overnighted to me…the day that I left for vacation. When I arrived here in Florida, it got to my university in Lexington! I’ll just have to remember next time to allow MUCH more time for servicing than I did for my sensor repair. π¦
Not wanting to be completely without a camera this week, I was convinced to bring along a small point-and-shoot to at least get SOME pictures. The camera I’m using, a Canon Powershot SX100 IS (circa 2007!) is overwhelmingly underpowered compared to my NEX-7 in nearly every performance aspect possible. The only exception is that it sports a handy 10x zoom with image stabilization covering the 36-360mm field-of-view in 35mm-format terms.
So, in close of this (painfully short) update, I’ll leave you with a sunset that I tried to keep from looking as “touristy” as possible. π
I’ve found this camera also has a handy macro mode (with a little control of depth-of-field!), so I’ll see if there are some tiny tropical flowers popping up and take a few more pictures suited to my usual style. Next week…we’ll see. π
I have an idea for an article or two this week as well, so stay tuned!
Well it doesn’t matter what kind of camera you are using, because you still manage to take a great photo. Enjoy your vacation, looking forward for the pictures you’ll be taking during your vacation (esp.with those tropical flowers.) π
Thank you angela, I’ll see what I can do. π
I always have my little canon ixus in my pocket, it’s of similar spec to your with a little less zoom but it does encourage me to look at things differently, watch some of the digitalrevtv cheap camera challenges for inspiration as to what can be achieved with a cheap compact over on youtube, you’ll find yourself having a little camera in your pocket a whole lot more often.
I have seen those challenges, and always do keep some sort of camera on me (iPhone!). This week will definitely be putting that saying “a good photographer can take good pictures even with a P&S” to the test. π
I tend to manually switch the flash off and only shoot at it’s widest, treating it as a wide Prime (I think mines about a 28mm equivalent)
With the macro mode only truly functional at my widest as well (36mm equiv.), I’m finding myself doing the same!
With interest I read your review on these little cameras. I, like many other serious photographers have until recently dismissed the point and shoot cameras.
They really do get you to think about “how can I make a good picture with ‘THIS’?” A challenge, but a good one, nonetheless. π
Ha…On the other hand it might just be the right tool for the job.
